Academic Advisor II - Theatre and Dance
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor II - Theatre and Dance at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties): Foster a welcoming culture environment for students that cultivates a sense of belonging.
Support College wide retention and persistence efforts Maintain continuous advising relationships with students in assigned programs and associated minors, as well as act as backup for the other programs within the department.
Cross train in programs outside of designated department to promote continuity of service and academic advising to students within the College.
Monitor, communicate, and document student interactions via university systems, social media, small group interactions, and face-to-face sessions, as appropriate.
Review transfer credits, AP credits, IB credits, and general graduation requirements.
Create and maintain suggested plans of work for undergraduate students based on curriculum structure, DFW rates, faculty and student feedback, and overall degree/program requirements.
Create individual semester schedules, based with appropriate referrals to department, college, and university-wide academic support resources to help students achieve their academic and career goals .
Aid and support students with internal and external resources for addressing barriers, including but not limited to: General Education Petitions, SAP appeals, Warrior Way Back plans, Foreign Language Adjustment Petitions, Guest Student Applications, Local counseling centers and helplines, the HIGH program, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Release various holds on student accounts (FA holds, probation holds, etc.
) and process course overrides Complete and submit CARE reports based on unusual student behavior, concerning mental or physical health situations, or threatening or violent actions.
Document all interactions with students via university reporting systems such as STARS and Slate as appropriate.
Run reports through STARS, Cognos, and IR to strategically communicate and reach out to specific groups of students, including but not limited to: · - EAA/Mid-term grades – reach out to all assigned students to receive a C- or lower in any of their classes: · - Graduation Cohorts – both 4-year and 6-year cohorts to see how we can support them in finishing their degree on time · - Not-yet registered reports – reach out to students who have not yet registered for an upcoming semester · - 90 credit hour report – reach out to students who have completed 90+ credit hours to see how we can help them to complete their degree Complete degree pre-certifications for our assigned programs and associated minors.
Plan, participate, and support student related department and College events and organizations.
Participate in both in-person and online recruitment events.
Develop internal and external partnerships in support of student success.
Prepare for and attend New Student Orientation sessions both in person and online: · - Approximately 5 sessions for Winter admits · - Approximately 30 sessions over the spring and summer for Fall admits Constant communication with fellow department advisors to discuss student issues and how we can address and provide a resolution.
Review opportunities to improve the overall ‘customer service’ experience for students to ensure they receive optimum care and service of their needs.
Collaborate and discuss in the academic advising forums both at the college and university levels how to improve overall student academic success and engagement.
Join area/ program faculty meetings and act as the primary student-centered advocate.
Attend department faculty meetings to learn of new opportunities for students as well as to inform faculty of student service issues.
Serve on various department, college, and university level committees as expected per contract factors for ESS and promotion.
Engage in ongoing professional development to stay on top of student services/ affairs best practices as well as best practices in the industries related to the programs within the College.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Master’s degree required.
Ability to quickly assimilate extensive knowledge of complex nature.
Ability to relate well and establish rapport with students, staff, faculty, parents, and community members.
Proficient time management, organization, communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and computer skills.
Ability to work well independently and in a team setting.
Knowledge of best practices in academic advising.
Experience with diverse student populations: ethnic, gender, age, economic level, first generation, etc.
Ability to work effectively with students with varying levels of academic preparedness.
Working knowledge of social media.
