Job Purpose:
The University Advising Center seeks an Academic Advisor II to join its dedicated team of professionals.
We deliver high quality, student centered and culturally responsive support to students.
The successful
candidate’s primary responsibility will be to support the academic needs of pre-health students from
onboarding through the pre-requisite and professional school application process.
Essential Functions:
The advisor is responsible for assisting students with navigating the transition to Wayne State including
advising/registration support during first-year and transfer orientation, one-on-one advising and group
advising for multiple pre-health curriculums, helping students assess their academic and personal needs,
and making appropriate referrals as needed.
This position will assist students exploring alternative
career pathways when needed.
Create a welcoming environment of support and belonging.
Assist students with navigating pre-health curriculums and the co-curricular requirements for
application to professional programs.
Help student balance life commitments with school and navigating the educational process.
Continuous support for pre-professional students including one-on-one advising, group advising, and
topic-specific workshops.
Provide additional support for students who are in academic distress and create a plan for academic
recovery.
Provide additional support for career changers who need to explore other academic and career
opportunities.
As part of the Pre-Med and Health Science Team, help create and coordinate programs, information
sessions, and open houses that support the unique needs of pre-professional students.
Support the unit with New Student Orientation (transfer and FTIAC) duties including scheduling,
training, and presentation content.
Make referrals to student support offices as needed.
Keep detailed notes in student tracking system.
Participate in strategic planning focused on pre-professional students.

Unique duties:
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Higher Ed.
Leadership, Student Personnel Services, or related field preferred.
Minimum of three years working in higher education.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Ability to collaborate as needed.
Experience working with diverse populations.
Ability to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
Experience advocating student needs, goals, and concerns with colleagues to create an environment of
thriving and persistence.
Strong desire to promote educational achievement.
Competence in decision making, organization and time management skills with a high attention to
detail.
Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
Excellent computer skills and the ability to adapt to new software programs and online resources.
