Job Description
The primary role of the Industrial Sewing Instructor is to develop and implement a multi-level industrial sewing curriculum that prepares students for employment in the sewing industry.
Responsibilities
Reports to BOOST Director
Implement a multi-level industrial sewing curriculum geared to workforce development, focusing on commercial businesses and sewing apprenticeship.
Administer methods of evaluation to track student progress.
Prepare students to meet all the Department of Labor Industrial Sewing Apprenticeship competencies.
Administer sewing apprenticeship program - RTI (Related Technical Instruction) and OJT (On the Job Training)
Prepare students for employment in the sewing industry including technical and soft skills necessary for success.
Conduct student entrance and exit surveys, as well as entrance placement exams.
Conduct sewing instruction and manage sewing volunteers
Use Google Classroom and Google Suite for curriculum delivery
Oversee sewing apprentices and provide direction as needed
Track student attendance, grades, and progress notes in the database.
Troubleshoot repairs for sewing machines as needed
Provide student data and reports to BOOST Director for grant reporting
Assist Entrepreneurship instructor with developing income generating projects for students, including pattern making
Develop and grow partnerships in the sewing industry
Qualifications
Minimum three years work experience in the sewing industry
Bachelors or Associates degree in a field related to sewn trades such as fashion design, tailoring or apparel product development.
Certificates in specialized sewing skills from employer or training facility required
Experience with dressmaking and tailoring using a variety of machines
Familiarity with a broad range of industrial sewing machines
Experience as a teacher or trainer in sewing or other manual skill
Education or experience in education
Strong Classroom Management Skills
Working knowledge of Google Suite, including Google Classroom and basic computer skills
Ability to use online resources to support the management and delivery of instruction

High attention to detail and innovative problem-solving skills
Flexibility with work related activities
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills
Energetic, hard-working and flexible
Experience working in community based organizations a plus
Passion for working with a culturally diverse and low-income population and ability to act with awareness and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences in target populations
